Vance says Middle East was ‘desperately’ calling on US to broker a deal
US Vice President JD Vance has defended the agreement between Washington and Tehran, rejecting suggestions that the United States is imposing a settlement on the region despite the deal containing provisions related to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The negotiations did not include representatives from either Israel or Lebanon, even though the agreement addresses issues linked to the fighting between the two sides.
"This is a deal that the region has desperately asked the United States to put in place," Vance said. "This region has been a basket case for a very long time."
His comments come as Israeli officials continue to reject calls for a withdrawal from southern Lebanon, despite Iran saying the agreement requires Israeli forces to leave Lebanese territory.
