State of Law Coalition Leader Nouri Al-Maliki andReconstruction and Development Coalition Leader (Al-Ima'ar wal-Tanmiya),caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, have reached a deal tonominate Ali Al-Zaidi as a compromise candidate for prime minister, politicalsources told Shafaq News on Monday.
The sources said Al-Zaidi maintains broad ties with leadersof the Coordination Framework (CF), which holds around 162 of parliament’s 329seats, as well as links to the private office of Sadrist Movement leaderMuqtada Al-Sadr.
“Al-Zaidi may face challenges in forming a government andsecuring parliamentary approval after being tasked,” they stated.
The nomination followed two meetings over the past 24 hourshosted by Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Chairman Faleh Al-Fayyad, whobrought together Al-Sudani and Al-Maliki.
Al-Zaidi, who hails from Dhi Qar province, previously servedas chairman of the South Bank and currently heads the National Holding Group(Al Watania Holding) and Al-Shaab University, in addition to owning Dijlah TV.
The CF has repeatedly failed agree on a nominee. UnderIraq’s post-2003 power-sharing arrangement, the presidency goes to a Kurd, thepremiership to a Shiite, and the speakership to a Sunni Arab. Parliamentelected Nizar Amedi as president on April 11, triggering the process to choosea prime minister. The Framework constitutional deadline ended on April 26 topresent a candidate, after which the nominee has 30 days to form a governmentand secure parliamentary confidence under Article 76 of the constitution.
