The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Sunday that it is investigating reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of the Darkhovein nuclear power plant in Iran.
In a statement followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the agency said it is "in the process of verifying reports of an attack targeting the construction site of the Darkhovein nuclear power plant in Iran."
It added that "the facility was in the very early stages of construction and did not contain any nuclear material at the time of the agency's last inspection."
Earlier, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced that the United States had targeted the Darkhovein plant in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The past 24 hours have witnessed a new escalation in the military confrontation between the United States and Iran, with military operations continuing for the eighth consecutive day following the collapse of the truce between the two sides.
The United States launched a new wave of airstrikes, with the US Central Command announcing that it had carried out strikes against Iranian targets, involving fighter jets and warships equipped with long-range missiles.
Washington confirmed that the strikes were in retaliation for an attack on a US base in Jordan that killed two American soldiers and wounded others, while the search continues for one missing soldier.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced it had carried out missile and drone attacks targeting US bases and sites, while reports indicated that air defense systems in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan intercepted a number of missiles and drones.
As tensions escalated in the Gulf, air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, while Kuwait reported that some facilities, including desalination plant, had been damaged by the attacks.
Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz also experienced increasing disruption amid warnings to commercial vessels, as the security developments impacted global markets, with oil prices rising by more than 4 percent.
