Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyoni broke the world record in the men's 1000m race at the Monaco Diamond League meet.

Wanyoni, the Olympic 800m champion, finished the race on Friday evening in 2:11.83, nearly a second ahead of Britain's Jake Whitman, while Algeria's Djamel Sejjati took third place.

Wanyoni surpassed the previous record set by his compatriot Noah Ngeny 27 years ago by 0.13 seconds.

"This is the first time I've run 1000 meters, and breaking the world record right away makes me incredibly happy," Wanyoni said after his historic achievement. "I want to thank the other athletes who pushed me to my limits."

It is worth noting that the 1000-meter race is a rare event and is not included in the Olympic Games or the World Athletics Championships.
