Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein on Monday received an official invitation from his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shaibani, to visit Damascus.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Syria's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Al-Shaibani, on the sidelines of the Arab Consultative Meeting and the resumed 165th Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, both of which are being hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
He added that "the meeting explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Syria and enhance joint cooperation across various fields in a manner that serves the mutual interests of the two brotherly peoples, in addition to exchanging views on a number of issues of common concern."
The statement further noted that "the two sides also discussed the importance of activating the work of the Iraqi-Syrian Joint Committee, enhancing economic and trade cooperation, and advancing coordination on border-related issues, in a way that contributes to bolstering security and stability and supporting development efforts in both countries."
According to the statement, FM Hussein reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to further consolidating its relations with the Syrian Arab Republic and supporting all efforts aimed at enhancing stability and regional cooperation. He stressed the importance of continuing joint coordination to address shared challenges and achieve mutual interests.
For his part, FM Asaad Al-Shaibani expressed Syria's readiness to enhance cooperation with Iraq across various sectors, underscoring the importance of advancing bilateral relations in a manner commensurate with the deep historical and fraternal ties binding the two brotherly countries.
Al-Shaibani also extended an official invitation to Fuad Hussein to visit the Syrian Arab Republic. The minister welcomed the invitation, and both sides agreed to coordinate in order to determine a date for the visit in the near future, in a move aimed at advancing bilateral relations and expanding prospects for joint cooperation between the two brotherly nations.
