US President Donald Trump announced on Monday the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran, and indicated that the Strait of Hormuz had been partially reopened.
In a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Trump said, as followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "We signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz has been partially reopened," adding that "the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened on Friday."
He added that "the agreement with Iran will benefit the Middle East region," emphasizing that "Iran will not possess a nuclear weapon, and it agreed to this, which was the core of the conflict." He further stated that "the agreement Obama made with Iran would have enabled it to develop a nuclear weapon."
He continued, "We want good relations with Iran, and if that doesn't happen, we will return to war, and I hope that doesn't." He indicated that "US Secretary of Defense J.D. Vance will attend the signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding with Iran," adding, "I want to publish the memorandum of understanding with Iran because it is an important and powerful document, and we will publish it soon." He also confirmed that "the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened after the mines are cleared, and it will reopen without tolls."
"Easing sanctions on Iran depends on its behavior," noting that "we want to see how we can resolve the conflict in Lebanon, and we must talk to (Israel) about this." Trump said.
For his part, Macron affirmed, "We will support the United States, Iran, and Oman in reopening the Strait of Hormuz," adding that "the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran is a very important agreement, and the memorandum is an important step towards world peace."
