Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom said in a joint statement early on Monday that they were prepared to lift sanctions on Iran following an agreement between Tehran and Washington. The statement said: “We warmly welcome the announcement of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.” It added: “Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. We stand ready to work with the United States, Iran, and the IAEA to this end.” The four countries also said they were prepared to lift sanctions in response to “clear and verifiable” steps by Iran regarding its nuclear programme.
