Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel discussed on Sunday the possibility of reopening the Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad, according to a statement from the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.
The ministry said Hussein received a phone call from the Portuguese foreign minister during which Rangel congratulated him on renewing confidence in his position and resuming his duties as foreign minister, wishing him success in carrying out his responsibilities.
The two sides reviewed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Portugal, including the potential reopening of the Portuguese embassy in Baghdad, in a move aimed at enhancing cooperation across various fields.
They also discussed Iraq–European Union relations and means of further developing them, with both sides emphasizing the importance of Portugal’s support for Iraq’s efforts in this regard.
According to the statement, the discussions further covered prospects for coordination on international issues, as well as regional developments, particularly the situation in the region and the impact of military operations in the Strait of Hormuz on regional security and global economic stability.
The Portuguese foreign minister extended an official invitation to Hussein to visit Portugal next month to continue consultations and strengthen bilateral ties.
For his part, Hussein expressed appreciation for the invitation and the congratulatory message, welcoming the visit and affirming his readiness to accept it in a way that serves the mutual interests of both countries.
