The Minister of Justice, Khaled Shwani, directed on Monday, the completion of infrastructure development projects, the reduction of overcrowding, and the expansion of educational programs within prisons.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "Minister of Justice Khaled Shwani chaired a meeting that included the senior staff of the Iraqi Correctional Service. During the meeting, they discussed plans and measures to complete what was achieved during the first phase of the ministry's projects, aimed at developing correctional institutions and improving their humanitarian and service conditions."
The statement added, "The meeting featured discussions on the mechanisms for implementing the upcoming phase of the development plans. The Minister directed the completion of prison expansion projects and accelerated the completion of projects that have reached advanced execution rates. This aims to alleviate overcrowding and improve the reality of correctional facilities, in alignment with the ministry's orientation to apply human rights standards and international guidelines for prison management."
The statement continued: "The Minister also directed the expansion of educational programs within correctional institutions to cover all prisons and various academic levels, emphasizing the importance of education and rehabilitation in supporting reform programs and the social reintegration of inmates, thereby enhancing their opportunities for academic and professional development."
He affirmed that "the ministry is proceeding with the implementation of the second phase of its future plans, aimed at establishing an integrated correctional environment. This environment is based on developing infrastructure, improving services, and applying international humanitarian standards, in line with the government program and the ministry's reformative and developmental plans."
