Iraqi President Nizar Amedi said on the National Day of Mass Graves that national responsibility calls for continuing the search to uncover the remains of the rest of the martyrs and return them to their families.
Amedi said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that “on the National Day of Mass Graves, we recall with deep pain and sorrow our martyrs who were victims of the repressive practices of the dictatorial regime that committed the most horrific crimes against our people in all their components.”
He added, “Tens of thousands of our people were subjected to organized killings at the hands of the repressive apparatus of the dictatorial regime and were buried in mass graves in various regions of the country,” noting that “national responsibility calls on us today to continue the search to uncover the remains of the rest of the martyrs and return them to their families, and to provide further services to the families of the martyrs, compensate them, and ensure decent living conditions worthy of their great sacrifices.”
