The foreign ministers of the BRICS group met today, Thursday, in the Indian capital, New Delhi, to discuss the repercussions of the war in Iran and the energy crisis, with the participation of Iran and Russia.

A statement issued by the BRICS group, reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), indicated that "the meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers, held in the Indian capital, New Delhi, was dominated by the repercussions of the war in Iran and the energy crisis. The meeting was attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov."

In his opening remarks, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar warned of "ongoing changes that have caused economic instability and disruptions to energy security," adding, "We are meeting at a time when international relations are undergoing continuous changes."

Jaishankar added that "ongoing wars, economic instability, and challenges in the areas of trade, technology, and climate are reshaping the global landscape," noting that "expectations are growing day by day, especially from emerging markets and developing countries, that the BRICS group will play a constructive and stabilizing role." Jaishankar added, "Disruptions to shipping lanes in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz continue to cause instability in oil and gas markets and have increased pressure on the economies of energy-importing countries, including India."

India holds the G7 presidency this year and hosted the meeting of foreign ministers of the expanded bloc, which now also includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE—countries with differing positions on the Middle East conflict.
