CNN reported that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) said on Tuesday that the cost of the US war against Iran has reached $29 billion so far.
The network said in a report, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The cost of the American war against Iran has reached $29 billion so far, an estimate higher than the figure presented by senior Pentagon officials to Congress two weeks ago, which was $25 billion.”
During a House Appropriations Committee hearing, U.S. Department of Defense comptroller Jay Hurst stated, "At the time of my testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, the figure was $25 billion, but the joint staff team and the comptroller team are constantly looking at this estimate, and therefore we now believe it is closer to $29 billion," attributing the reason to "updated costs for repairing and replacing equipment, as well as general operating costs to maintain personnel presence in the theater."
The cost estimate for a U.S. war against Iran that Hurst presented to Congress in April was $25 billion, a figure that was low and did not include the estimated cost of repairing the extensive damage to U.S. bases in the Middle East.
One source said, “A more accurate estimate is closer to $40-50 billion, when accounting for the costs of repairing and replacing damaged equipment.”
When asked if he could provide Congress with a more detailed official statement on the cost of a war with Iran, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said, “The Pentagon will share what we can… when it is appropriate and required.”
Democratic Representative Pete Aguilar said, "I think this is the form that is needed."
