Iraq’s General Customs Authority announced on Monday the arrival of the first international road transport (TIR) shipment from Syria bound for Kuwait through Al-Waleed Border Crossing.
According to a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the shipment arrived under the direct supervision of Director General Thamer Qasim Dawood, in what the authority described as a qualitative achievement reflecting Iraq’s growing role as a regional hub for international transport and trade.
The statement said the Al-Waleed Customs Center received the first TIR shipment coming from Syria and heading to Kuwait through the Safwan Border Crossing, within the framework of the internationally recognized TIR Convention.
It added that customs personnel at Al-Waleed organized the shipment’s entry in accordance with approved procedures and carried out inspections and verification of shipping documents and customs seals ahead of completing the legal and customs requirements for its transit through Iraqi territory.
The shipment was also moved into the customs yard under direct supervision and monitoring pending completion of all official procedures, in line with regulations governing international transit movement and measures ensuring the safety of goods and the smooth flow of transport operations.
The authority said receiving the first TIR shipment through Al-Waleed marks an important strategic step within state efforts to activate regional transport corridors and strengthen trade connectivity among neighboring countries, while reinforcing Iraq’s position as an active logistical and commercial transit route in the region.
The statement noted that the implementation of the global TIR system contributes to accelerating transit procedures and reducing operational time and costs, alongside enhancing customs oversight and improving compliance efficiency in line with modernization and automation plans adopted by the customs authority.
