Justice Minister Khaled Shawani discussed the issue of prisoners transferred from Syria with President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Marijana Spoljaric, on Monday.
A statement from the Ministry of Justice, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that “Minister of Justice, Khalid Shawani, received the President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Marijana Spoljaric, and her accompanying delegation, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and joint coordination regarding foreign detainees who were transferred from Syria to Iraq, and mechanisms for dealing with this file in accordance with the approved legal frameworks. During the meeting, the provision of the necessary support by the international community for the file of detainees transferred to Iraq was discussed.”
The minister stressed "the importance of strengthening international cooperation and coordination with the countries concerned to urge them to receive their nationals who are inmates in correctional prisons, and return them to their countries in accordance with the agreements concluded with the Iraqi side, and in line with legal and humanitarian obligations."
For her part, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross expressed "her organization's readiness to support communication efforts with the countries concerned, and to contribute to facilitating procedures for transferring inmates to their countries, as well as continuing cooperation with the Ministry of Justice in humanitarian and reform aspects."
