The Head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri Al-Maliki on Friday called on the government to review its mechanisms for dealing with farmers’ demands and safeguarding their rights.
In a post on X, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Maliki said the agricultural initiative had achieved notable success in strengthening food security, crediting the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant institutions, as well as the strong commitment of Iraqi farmers, whom deserved appreciation, respect, and support.
He added that it was unacceptable for farmers to be deprived of their dues for delivered crops, and subsequently subjected to harsh treatment when seeking their entitlements, stressing that such conduct is not befitting of Iraqi farmers and agricultural workers.
Al-Maliki further urged the government to reassess and improve its procedures for responding to farmers’ legitimate demands, and called for accountability measures against any party found to be infringing upon their rights during the pursuit of their dues.
