US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican days after President Donald Trump renewed his disagreement with the Pope over the Iran war.

The Vatican News Agency published photos of Rubio's meeting with the Pope, showing the two seated as the Pope spoke to the Secretary.

A statement issued by the US State Department indicated that the discussions focused on "the situation in the Middle East and issues of mutual interest in the Western Hemisphere," emphasizing that both sides highlighted "the strong relationship between the United States and the Holy See and their shared commitment to promoting peace and human dignity."

For his part, Rubio posted photos of the meeting on social media, writing: "I met with the Pope to reaffirm our shared commitment to promoting peace and human dignity."

Regarding his meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, the State Department explained that the two ministers reviewed "ongoing humanitarian efforts in the Western Hemisphere and efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East."

According to Vatican News, the two sides discussed during the meeting the Israeli attacks on Lebanon as part of its mission to defeat Hezbollah, along with the situation in both Iran and Cuba.
