The Atlantic Council, a US research center, affirmed on Saturday that Prime Minister-designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi's success in the business world is proof of his political competence and his ability to assume the position of Prime Minister.
The Council stated in an article translated by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "the Coordination Framework nominated businessman Ali al-Zaidi last Monday to be the next Prime Minister of Iraq, concluding a lengthy negotiation process."
It added that "upon assuming office in the coming weeks, al-Zaidi will face a complex set of challenges, including controlling weapons, a fragile, oil-dependent economy, a bloated government bureaucracy in terms of salaries, and corruption that often hinders even limited progress." The article continued, "Al-Zaidi's success in the business world is evidence of his political competence and ability to assume this position. Furthermore, the phone call between Trump and al-Zaidi, which included an invitation to the White House, constitutes a strong indication of US support for the Iraqi Prime Minister-designate." It concluded, "Al-Zaidi's success depends on the Iraqi leadership's understanding of the gravity of the situation and their prioritization of national interests over narrow partisan interests. Should al-Zaidi's government fail, this failure will not be limited to him alone, but will reflect a deeper crisis within the entire Iraqi political system."
