Al-Maliki calls on Parliament to postpone the legislation of the mandatory conscription

The head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, called on Parliament on Wednesday to postpone the legislation of the mandatory conscription law.

Al-Maliki said in a post on the (X) platform, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “Parliament a proposal to reinstate mandatory military service, an idea that is outdated, as modern wars no longer depend on large numbers of soldiers, but rather on drones and advanced technologies,” indicating that “including large numbers will cost the state huge sums without any real need.”

He added, "It is better to direct these resources to developing the efficiency of the army and building an effective force with fewer numbers," calling on " Parliament to postpone the legislation of this law."
