Iran and Qatar stressed the importance of avoiding an escalation of tensions in the region during a phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said the two sides discussed regional developments, “particularly the current events in the Strait of Hormuz,” and emphasized the importance of “using diplomatic capacities to resolve regional issues.”
They also stressed the need to maintain channels of communication and coordination in order to avoid an escalation of tensions in the region.
The call came after the United States and Iran exchanged heavy strikes in connection with attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. One of the targeted vessels was a Qatari tanker, and Doha blamed Tehran for the attack.
