The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) affirmed on Tuesday that Iraq has moved beyond the stage of stabilization and recovery to a stage of sustainable institutional development and achieving long-term national priorities.

The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Mohammad, stated in a speech during the closing ceremony of the Demographic Transition Project in Iraq, which was attended by an Iraqi News Agency (INA) correspondent: “This occasion provides an opportunity to review what has been achieved in Iraq over the past five years, and it invites us to reflect on what these achievements mean for the country’s future and its trajectory.”

“Iraq continues its transition from a phase focused on stability and recovery to a strategic phase of sustainable institutional development and achieving long-term national priorities,” he added.

"The importance of demographic shifts becomes clear, as they directly affect how planning is carried out, job creation is provided, and social protection programs are implemented, while they help government agencies make decisions related to future generations,” he stated.

"The population census in Iraq provided a comprehensive and up-to-date demographic picture for policymaking and also represented a response to real needs, while the overall challenge remains how to translate the data into tangible policies and investments," he confirmed.

"The Demographic Transition Program in Iraq has made significant and tangible contributions by supporting and promoting reproductive health and addressing contemporary issues," he added, pointing out that "the program has transcended boundaries to encompass several important areas of social development, thus transforming this work, in essence, into an investment in human capital."
