The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a dialogue session on Thursday on the environment of the Iraqi marshes, highlighting a Canadian-funded project aimed at enhancing biodiversity and protecting the marshes from drought.

In his opening remarks at the session, attended by a correspondent from the Iraqi News Agency (INA), UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Iraq, Mehdi Khalili, said, "The marshes are not merely a unique ecosystem but also a source of livelihood and an integral part of the identity and cultural heritage of thousands of people. However, they continue to face growing challenges, including climate change, water scarcity, environmental degradation, and pressures on biodiversity.”

He added: “Through the project Enhancing Human Resilience and Biodiversity in the Marshes of Mesopotamia, funded by the Government of Canada, UNDP and its partners are working to strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems. This includes supporting sustainable livelihoods, enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts, raising environmental awareness, and empowering local communities to play an active role in protecting the marshes.”

Khalili continued: “Today’s session provides an opportunity to review the progress achieved, exchange experiences, and explore practical solutions for the future. It also allows us to hear directly from experts, practitioners, and representatives of local communities, whose knowledge and dedication are driving positive change—change that requires long-term commitment from all relevant partners.”
