Azerbaijan and Iran held the 55th meeting of the Joint Committee on the Araz River on Thursday, discussing ways to enhance cooperation in water resource management. Officials from both countries agreed on new measures for monitoring and managing the river’s waters.
The Azerbaijani News Agency reported that “the meeting was chaired by the Azerbaijani co-chair of the committee, Zakir Guliyev, head of the Regional Water Reclamation Authority, and the Iranian co-chair, Fariba Avardeh, head of the General Directorate of Border Rivers at the Ministry of Energy.”
“Representatives from the Regional Water Reclamation Authority, the State Service for Water Use Control and Protection, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the state-owned electricity company participated in the meeting," the agency added.
“During the meeting, operational mechanisms related to the distribution of the Araz River’s water resources between the two countries were prepared and approved. Discussions also covered monitoring water withdrawals from the river, controlling water quality, installing modern water-measurement equipment, and other areas of cooperation," according to the agency.
