Head of the Supreme Islamic Council, Sheikh Humam Hammoudi, affirmed on Sunday that restricting weapons to the hands of the state is “a demand of the religious authority, not a foreign demand,” stressing the need for a national, constitutional, and legal framework to achieve it.
Speaking during the Dialogue Forum attended by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) correspondent, Sheikh Hammoudi said that “the people are greater than political parties and must act as a watchdog over the government and stand courageously against any interference.”
He noted that “foreign interventions should not pass without a courageous public response, from which decision-makers can draw strength to preserve the will, decision, and sovereignty of the people.”
He added, “It is our responsibility to cooperate with Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi and ensure that the success of the government becomes a success for Iraq.”
Hammoudi further stated that “if the new government seeks success, it must derive its strength from its closeness to the people, through direct field follow-up of their affairs and concerns.”
He reiterated that “restricting weapons to state control is a demand of the religious authority, not an external demand, and it requires a national, constitutional, and legal vision.”
He also called for “drawing lessons from the Iraqi experience during the era of the tyrant,” stressing that “understanding and containment are the best solutions instead of undermining the unity of the country.”
