The National Political Council said on Wednesday that understandings related to the formation of the government had been completed.
The council said in a statement, received by The Iraqi News Agency-INA that it held a meeting on Wednesday evening at the residence of Thabit al-Abbasi in Baghdad, attended by the speaker of parliament and leaders of parties and alliances forming the council.
The participants discussed developments in the political process and reviewed the main political, economic and security challenges facing the country, stressing the importance of unifying efforts to confront them in a way that strengthens stability and supports state institutions.
The statement added that the council confirmed the completion of understandings regarding the government formation file and the completion of the necessary preparations to move forward with what it described as a national entitlement within the frameworks of consensus and responsibility.
The council also affirmed its readiness to attend a parliamentary session to vote on the government should the speaker of parliament call for one, the statement said.
The attendees also discussed the outlines of the government programme and submitted an integrated paper containing their vision and proposals aimed at supporting a government programme that meets citizens' aspirations, while including issues related to their provinces within the political agreement paper and the government programme, according to the statement.
