Far-right billionaire says anti-migrant and ultra-nationalist movements have been misrepresented in media

Billionaire and far-right influencer Elon Musk has claimed that Muslim immigration to the UK means there will be a "reckoning" in the near future, implying a threat of civil war in the country.

Speaking to the Economist magazine's editor-in-chief, Musk was asked whether he was "anti-Muslim".

“If people are coming to a country with antithetical views, I am against that,” he said in response.

“I’m against rape and murder, I’m against the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West. I think it’s a crying shame that the traditional media don’t recognise this.”

When pushed by Zanny Minton Beddoes on past comments suggesting "civil war" was "inevitable" in the UK, Musk said that it was "on the current trend".

"That is nonsense. The numbers also disprove what you say. London is a much safer city than any city in the US," said Beddoes in response. "You have painted Europe and the UK as overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants, there's rape on every corner, there's civilisational destruction."

Fixation on migration

Musk then conceded that it had been a "few years" since he had been to the UK, but also claimed he "didn't say any of those things".

In recent years, Musk has helped fuel far-right, anti-migrant and Islamophobic violence in the UK through his posting on the social media site X and boosting of far-right political organisations and individuals such as Restore Britain and Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Riots that erupted in Belfast and Southampton last month that targeted refugees and non-white communities were sparked after Musk called for protests after footage of a violent knife attack was shared on social media.

The billionaire has fixated on the UK, and Europe more broadly, claiming without evidence that the rise of non-white communities in the continent has led to a rise in violence and sexual assault.

Musk has himself been accused of sexual harassment and abuse, including one incident in which SpaceX paid an employee $250,000 after Musk allegedly exposed himself to her on a plane.

Business Insider, which reported the story, reported that Musk had said there was "a lot more to this story".

According to its report, Musk had called the story a "politically motivated hit piece".

Seperately, eight former SpaceX employees launched a lawsuit in 2024 alleging that Musk personally ordered their firing after they accused the company of tolerating sexual harassment in the workplace.

Musk's X also faced a ban and possible criminal action in Europe earlier this year after it was found that the Grok AI app was being used to produce non-consensual and child sexual abuse material.

He initially claimed to be unaware of the deepfake sexualised imagery - even mocking users who complained about it - and despite saying the company had tightened its safeguards, the Grok AI is still reportedly producing sexual deepfake material.
