The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Thursday international contracts to cover 3.5 million dunams with modern irrigation systems, while affirming its continued support for farmers and the modernization of the agricultural sector to meet challenges.

Ministry of Agriculture spokesperson, Mahdi Suhr al-Jubouri, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The agricultural sector in Iraq faces significant challenges, including climate change, declining water resources, reduced rainfall, and production risks such as drought.”

He added that “there are problems in the marketing process (sorting, packaging, and labeling) of all agricultural products and their export,” explaining that “the marketing process adds value instead of exporting products as raw materials outside of Iraq.”

He pointed out that “contracts have been signed with reputable international companies to equip the agricultural sector with more than 13,000 systems covering approximately 3.5 million dunams, relying on groundwater and reducing pressure on surface water in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, thus preserving cultivated areas and agricultural production, in addition to other uses such as drinking and industrial uses.”
