US launches strikes on Iran after IRGC hits container in Hormuz

The United States Central Command (Centcom) said early Sunday morning that its forces began launching a third round of strikes on Iran this week after Iran’s IRGC attacked a Cyprus-flagged container transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on X, Centcom said a civilian crew member of M/V GFS Galaxy was missing, and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engine-room damage.

“Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels, but has again failed,” the Centcom statement said.

Centcom added that the United States is “imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait”.

"The strikes were carried out at the direction of the Commander in Chief," Centcom said.
