Report: US expects Iran to announce 'Hormuz open toll free, we messed up'
The Trump administration has given Iran until Saturday to publicly acknowledge that the Strait of Hormuz is open and pledge to stop firing on commercial ships, Axios reported, citing US officials.
Axios reported that the message has been conveyed directly and through regional mediators, three US officials said in a briefing with reporters on Friday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi, in Muscat on Saturday to discuss the Hormuz crisis and maritime security.
US officials told Axios they expect Iran to issue a statement after the Muscat talks, and the failure to do so would bring "harsh consequences”.
One of the officials told Axios: “We want them to publicly say that they will stop shooting at ships and explicitly, or at least implicitly, acknowledge that they screwed up. We are working on that now."
