Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it had not requested negotiations with the United States, stressing that its position is based on the principle of “commitment for commitment.”
In a statement, the ministry said that, in line with its responsible approach, it had not rejected a request from a regional mediator to visit Iran and hold talks on recent developments. It added that a Qatari delegation had visited the city of Mashhad, where Iranian views and positions were conveyed.
The ministry accused the United States of making “breach of commitments a habit,” saying Washington had repeatedly violated provisions of a memorandum of understanding signed 22 days earlier.
It added that U.S. attacks on Wednesday and Thursday constituted a “blatant violation” of the first and second clauses of the memorandum. The ministry also said the cancellation of sanctions relief on Iranian oil sales, along with the imposition of new sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities, represented a clear breach of the memorandum’s provisions.
Iran had made clear from the outset that its approach is based on “commitment for commitment,” the ministry said, adding that Tehran would not fulfill any obligation unless the other party honored its commitments.
“If the other party fails to fulfill its commitments, as it has done, we will take the necessary measures. We have done so, and this approach will continue,” the ministry said.
