The Iraqi National Security Service-INSS announced on Friday that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle large commercial shipments in Basra and arrested 12 suspects.

In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), INSS said that, based on precise intelligence regarding the movement of the shipments and after obtaining the necessary judicial approvals, it was able to thwart an attempt to smuggle large commercial consignments by manipulating customs declarations that did not match the goods loaded in Basra Governorate.

The statement added that 12 suspects were arrested, including three responsible employees.

It further noted that auditing procedures revealed that the value of the violations and the resulting damage to public funds amounted to approximately 19 billion Iraqi dinars.

INSS said the suspects, along with the seized materials, were referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete the legal procedures against them.
