Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized today, Thursday, during his meeting with the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Kuwait, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, the importance of establishing joint mechanisms and preventative measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents that have affected Iraqi fishermen in the border areas and overlapping waters between Iraq and Kuwait.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), indicated that "Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, on the sidelines of his official visit to the State of Kuwait, met with the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Kuwait, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah."
The statement added that "during the meeting, bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the State of Kuwait were discussed, particularly in the security field, and ways to enhance coordination and cooperation between the relevant authorities in both countries in a manner that contributes to consolidating security and stability and protecting bilateral relations."
Fuad Hussein affirmed that "this is his first visit to the State of Kuwait since the formation of the Iraqi government, and it aims to present the Iraqi government's vision regarding the security challenges facing Iraq and the region, and their repercussions on its relations with neighboring countries, foremost among them the State of Kuwait."
The minister reviewed "the security challenges that Iraq faced as a result of the recent war, and the resulting repercussions that affected the security of Iraq and the region."
He pointed out that "the Iraqi government, headed by Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi, adopts a clear vision for addressing internal and external security challenges, and for strengthening cooperation with brotherly countries in a way that serves regional security and stability."
During the meeting, the minister mentioned "the incidents that Iraqi fishermen have been subjected to in the border areas and overlapping waters between the two countries, which recently resulted in a tragic incident that led to the death of an Iraqi fisherman," stressing "the importance of establishing joint mechanisms and preventive measures to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents, reflecting the keenness of the leadership of both countries to protect lives and preserve fraternal relations."
Both sides emphasized "the necessity of reaching common understandings in security matters and enhancing coordination between relevant agencies to ensure the security of both countries and prevent any unintended incidents or breaches from affecting bilateral relations."
The statement continued, "The two sides discussed the importance of continuing joint cooperation to investigate the security breaches reported by Kuwaiti authorities through joint technical work between the relevant agencies in both countries. This aims to obtain accurate information and take appropriate measures to safeguard shared interests and strengthen trust and cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait."
