Iraqi authorities detained Hussein Talib Abboud MarouhAl-Fadhli, director general of the Oil Products Distribution Company, inBaghad on Thursday, over alleged corruption cases, an official source toldShafaq News.

The arrest took place hours before Al-Fadhli was scheduledto take the constitutional oath as a replacement member of parliament, thesource said, adding that security personnel took him into custody in Baghdad’sAl-Rabee Street area.

Al-Fadhli had been selected as a replacement lawmaker forAmmar Mousa from the National State Forces Alliance in Baghdad province afterseveral elected lawmakers moved to executive positions in the currentgovernment. Several replacement lawmakers were scheduled to take theconstitutional oath during Thursday’s parliament session as part of proceduresto fill vacant seats in the sixth electoral term.

The Iraqi government established a wide anti-corruption campaign, the Dawn Crackdown, which led in its first phase to the arrest of about 67 officials, lawmakers, and businessmen.

Earlier, Oil Minister Bassem Al-Abadi urged stronger efforts to address challenges in the oil sector and combat corruption, stating that the next phase will focus on reviewing and improving performance.

The Oil Products Distribution Company operates under Iraq’sMinistry of Oil and manages fuel supply operations, petroleum productdistribution networks, and filling stations across the country.
