The Nineveh Governorate announced on Wednesday the launch of a project to revive and reconstruct the Bash Tabia Castle in Mosul, in cooperation with UNESCO, as part of the third phase of the "Reviving the Spirit of Mosul" program.
Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir Al-Dakhil told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "As part of efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Mosul, two initiatives have been launched to revive the Bash Tabia Castle, one of the city's most prominent historical landmarks, in a step aimed at preserving cultural heritage and enhancing tourism."
"The first initiative involves creating a heritage-themed tourist park surrounding the castle, covering an area of more than 9,000 square meters, in cooperation with UNESCO as part of the third phase of the 'Reviving the Spirit of Mosul' program. This will contribute to developing the area's cultural landscape and providing a cultural and tourist space that will attract visitors," he added.
"The second initiative includes preparing the necessary technical studies, engineering designs, and bills of quantities to begin the reconstruction project of Bash Tabya Castle through specialized engineering and academic teams, ensuring that the rehabilitation work is carried out according to approved standards to preserve the historical and archaeological value of the site," he stressed.
Bash Tabya Castle is one of the most prominent heritage landmarks in Mosul, dating back more than 1200 years. Throughout the ages, it has served as an important defensive stronghold.
The castle, through restoration, represents a significant step towards reclaiming one of Mosul's most important historical symbols and enhancing its presence on the map of cultural tourism in Iraq.
