Minister of Water Resources Muthanna al-Tamimi and the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Klemens Semtner, discussed on Tuesday addressing the challenges of water scarcity and the repercussions of climate change.
A statement from the Ministry of Water Resources, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), indicated that "Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, discussed during his meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Klemens Semtner, and his accompanying delegation, ways to strengthen the mechanism of joint cooperation and coordination and to develop work in the water resources management sector, in a step aimed at addressing the challenges of water scarcity and the repercussions of climate change, which are increasingly affecting Iraq."
During the meeting, both sides reviewed existing cooperation frameworks and ways to expand them, particularly in the areas of improving water resource management, rationalizing water use, supporting modern irrigation projects, and benefiting from European expertise in the water sector.
"The two sides emphasized the importance of activating the provisions of the partnership agreement between Iraq and the European Union in the field of irrigation, focusing on future projects that would enhance Iraq's ability to adapt to water scarcity and support the Ministry's ambitious plans to modernize infrastructure, thereby contributing to achieving water security and sustainable development," the statement added.
