The Head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri Al-Maliki said on Monday that combating corruption is a national priority requiring the cooperation of all state authorities.
Al-Maliki made the remarks during a meeting at his office with a delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party's parliamentary bloc, headed by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Farhad Al-Atroshi, according to a statement from the coalition Head's media office.
The two sides discussed the latest political developments in Iraq and a number of issues of mutual interest, the statement said.
They also stressed the importance of strengthening dialogue and understanding among political forces to help consolidate stability, support state institutions, and cooperate in addressing the country's challenges within the framework of the constitution and the law.
The meeting reviewed measures being taken by the government as part of its anti-corruption campaign. Al-Maliki underscored the importance of pursuing those efforts with determination, saying that fighting corruption is a national priority requiring coordinated action by all state authorities and institutions.
According to the statement, Al-Maliki also stressed the need for parliament to effectively carry out its legislative and oversight responsibilities by monitoring the performance of government institutions and promoting the principles of transparency and accountability, in order to safeguard public funds and strengthen public confidence in state institutions.
The two sides concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining coordination among political forces in a manner that serves Iraq's national interests and enhances prospects for stability and development.
