The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced on Monday that at least 330 children were killed or injured in Sudan during the first half of 2026.

In a statement, UNICEF said, "Children across Sudan continue to bear the brunt of an increasingly deadly war," noting that "at least 330 children were killed or injured during the first six months of 2026, with Darfur and Kordofan regions recording the highest rates of child casualties."

The organization warned that "the situation in and around El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, is extremely worrying," given the escalating attacks targeting the area.

The organization estimated that “around 500,000 civilians face increasing risks in and around El Obeid and across North Kordofan State,” warning that “any further deterioration of the situation could expose more children to death, injury, or displacement, as well as other serious risks that threaten their safety.”

UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yate, said that children are “caught in a cycle of violence, displacement, and deprivation, and for many, nowhere is safe anymore.”

He added that they are “being killed and injured in their homes, on the roads, in markets, and even while trying to access basic services such as education and healthcare.”

UNICEF emphasized that “children are not only at direct risk of being killed or injured, but are also subjected to serious violations including recruitment, exploitation, abduction, and sexual violence, in addition to attacks on schools and hospitals.”
