Cairo-INA

Iraqi MP Hanan Al-Fatlawi said on Tuesday that her election as deputy speaker of the Arab Parliament was a victory for Iraq and Iraqi women, pledging to promote Iraq's standing in regional and international forums.

Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) after being elected during the Arab Parliament's general session in Cairo, al-Fatlawi said she was pleased to represent Iraq in the new role and expressed hope that the country would maintain a strong presence at Arab and international gatherings.

"This is the first time in more than four years that a woman has been elected deputy speaker of the Arab Parliament. It is a victory for Iraq, for Arab women, and for Iraqi women in particular," she said.

Al-Fatlawi thanked Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi for supporting her nomination, as well as Iraqi and Arab members of the Arab Parliament for their support.

She said she would work to meet the expectations of the Arab people, raise Iraq's profile, and ensure Iraqi perspectives are represented in Arab and international forums.

Al-Fatlawi said that during her four years as a member of the Arab Parliament, she had worked to convey Iraq's views and help change perceptions of Iraq, Iraqis and the country's domestic situation. She also noted that the Arab Parliament had previously held one of its sessions in Baghdad.

She added that she would continue working to amplify Iraq's voice and support initiatives through the Arab Parliament.
