Iraq’s efforts to combat corruption are developing positively, while the process of recovering stolen assets is moving in the right direction, Manager of UNDP's Anti-Corruption and Arbitration Initiatives Yama Torabi said on Sunday.
Torabi, told the Iraq News Agency (INA) that the Iraqi government, represented by the Supreme Judicial Council and other relevant authorities, has made significant efforts in addressing corruption.
He said efforts had previously been incomplete in relation to asset recovery; however, the issue has recently become a government priority aimed at retrieving stolen funds and assets, noting that improvements have been observed in recent months.
He added that efforts to recover stolen funds and assets are progressing in the right direction, though they remain insufficient and require further work.
Torabi pointed to recommendations included in a judicial monitoring report, which identified more than 12 areas for improving procedures related to asset recovery, stressing the need for firm measures based on a clear strategy to implement established mechanisms.
He said government efforts in combating corruption and recovering stolen funds and assets are positive, adding that UNDP remains ready to provide technical expertise and capacity-building support.
