The Karkh Criminal Court issued a severe prison sentence on Monday against two defendants for the crime of damaging the funds of a grain trading company.

A statement from the Supreme Judicial Council, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "the Karkh Criminal Court issued a sentence of three years' imprisonment for two convicts for the crime of deliberately damaging the funds of the General Company for Grain Trade."

It added, "The two convicts deposited funds with a private bank, in violation of a Central Bank of Iraq directive prohibiting financial transactions with that bank due to legal violations."

It continued, "Their sentences were issued based on Article 340 of the Penal Code, in conjunction with Articles 47, 48, and 49 concerning complicity."
