The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced on Monday that it will return to Iraq at the end of the year with international experts, and indicated that it is working on presenting proposals to the Iraqi government on all topics.
The Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme for Arab States, Abdullah Al-Dardari, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has a very old partnership with Iraq, and has kept pace with all the stages that it has gone through, and we will remain in Iraq as long as Iraq wants us to be here.”
It added, "The program will return to Iraq at the end of this year, accompanied by specialized groups of international experts, based on what was heard from the visions and directives issued by the Iraqi presidencies, with the aim of transferring successful global experiences to Iraq," indicating that "the Iraqi government is the one that determines its priorities, while the role of the program is limited to supporting institution building, strengthening national capabilities, combating corruption, and managing economic and social development."
It noted that "during this period and until the end of the year, work will be done to delve deeper into studies and present proposals to the Iraqi government on all topics."
It pointed out that "Iraq represents a fundamental pillar in the region's economy," noting that "if Iraq manages to achieve an annual growth rate of 6%, it will have a positive impact on the countries of the region, as it will automatically raise their growth rate by about 2%."
