Iran's Supreme National Security Council on Thursday announced details of procedures governing the passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, in implementation of Article Five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, stating that no fees will be charged on vessels transiting the waterway for 60 days.

In a statement followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the council said commercial vessels seeking to transit the strait must submit requests to the Persian Gulf Waterway Administration.

It said no fees would be imposed on applicants for a period of 60 days, with the Iranian government covering the associated costs during that period.

The council added that the Persian Gulf Waterway Administration had been instructed to process, review and respond to applications with maximum speed and priority to ensure the objectives of the memorandum are achieved.

It said ensuring safe navigation and avoiding maritime incidents require vessels to adhere to designated routes and schedules, which would help gradually increase shipping traffic through the strait.

The council added that implementation arrangements and technical details related to transit through the Strait of Hormuz would be announced later by the Persian Gulf Waterway Administration.

It also said measures related to other issues, including mine clearance, would be implemented in accordance with the provisions of Article Five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
