Trump says Israel 'would be blown off the earth' if it weren't for the US, as he moves to silence any criticism of agreement

The US rebuffed an Israeli request to see the memorandum of understanding it signed with Iran, according to reports by US and Israeli media outlets.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that Israeli officials have been briefed on the agreement, but that Israel has not been provided the text.

The agreement, which was signed digitally by Iran and the US on Sunday, extends a fragile ceasefire between the two sides for 60 days and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, but the details of the text remain unclear.

US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, have taken to network TV to defend the MOU. Vance said the “coolest thing” about the diplomacy was that the US was now talking to the Iranians.

In 2015, the US, under President Barack Obama, and Iran negotiated a nuclear deal after months of high-level talks between the two countries. Trump unilaterally withdrew from the deal and imposed debilitating sanctions on Iran under his "maximum pressure" campaign.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would send the agreement to Congress and share it publicly. A signing ceremony is expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday.

"I never thought about sending it… but I will. I will send it to Congress,” Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the G-7 Summit in France.

He also said he would share the contents of the MOU. “I will probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word so that the press covers it accurately,” he said.

But reports that Israel has not been briefed on the agreement underscore a widespread sense in the region that the deal favours Iran and leaves many of the US-Israeli war goals unmet.

Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot already characterised the MOU as a “Bad Deal" this week.

Avigdor Liberman, a right-wing Israeli politician and former defence minister, slammed the agreement in an interview with Israel’s 103FM radio.

”This agreement definitely turns Iran into a nuclear power," Liberman said.

However, he said that Israel was stuck with any agreement the US signs.

"We need to live with this. I have no complaints against the Americans. There are people here who expect the US to act according to Israeli interests, but no. I thank the US for what they have done," he added.

Trump has also lashed out at any whiff of Israeli criticism about the deal.

“If it weren't for the United States of America…Israel would not exist right now. Israel would have been blown off the face of the earth,” Trump said, sitting alongside the ruler of Qatar at the G-7 conference.
