Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi affirmed on Sunday the Iraqi government’s commitment to resolving the issue of missing Kuwaitis, stressing that Iraq views the matter as a humanitarian issue.
The Prime Minister’s Media Office said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that “Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi received today, Sunday, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mari Yamashita, and her accompanying delegation.”
The statement added that “at the beginning of the meeting, Yamashita congratulated the Prime Minister on gaining the confidence of the Council of Representatives and forming the new government.”
The statement continued: “During the meeting, the two sides discussed a number of files of mutual interest between Iraq and the United Nations, including the measures and steps taken regarding the issue of missing Kuwaitis.”
According to the statement, the Prime Minister stressed that “Iraq views the issue of missing Kuwaitis as a humanitarian matter,” noting “the deep fraternal relations between the Iraqi and Kuwaiti peoples” and emphasizing that “the Iraqi government is committed to resolving this issue.”
For her part, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General praised the steps taken by the Iraqi government in the economic and security fields, stressing the United Nations’ continued support for Iraq’s efforts and initiatives aimed at promoting stability and development.
