Iraq’s Minister of Justice, Khalid Shwani, and Georgia’s Ambassador to Iraq, Archil Dzuliashvili, on Tuesday discussed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the transfer of convicted prisoners between Baghdad and Tbilisi.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice and received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Shwani received Dzuliashvili at the ministry’s headquarters to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation in judicial and legal fields between the two countries.
The meeting reviewed the conditions of Georgian inmates held in Iraqi correctional institutions and explored mechanisms for signing a memorandum of understanding between the Republic of Iraq and Georgia on the transfer of convicted prisoners, in line with applicable legal frameworks and in a manner that enhances cooperation between Baghdad and Tbilisi.
The minister reaffirmed the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to expanding cooperation with friendly countries through the conclusion of memoranda of understanding and the exchange of expertise and experiences in judicial and legal matters, contributing to stronger bilateral relations and serving shared interests.
For his part, the Georgian ambassador expressed his country’s appreciation for the existing level of cooperation with Iraq, stressing Georgia’s desire to further develop bilateral ties and enhance coordination across areas of mutual interest.
