President Nizar Amedi called on Sunday for the completion of the necessary investigations to determine the causes of the horrific traffic accident that occurred on the highway in Dhi Qar Governorate, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Amedi said: "With deep sorrow and grief, we received the news of the horrific traffic accident that occurred on the highway in Dhi Qar Governorate, which claimed the lives of and injured a number of our dear citizens."
He added: "In this painful tragedy, I extend my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to all Iraqis, asking God Almighty to grant the deceased His abundant mercy and forgiveness, to grant their families and loved ones with patience and solace, and to grant the injured a speedy recovery."
According to the statement, the President affirmed that "preserving the lives and safety of citizens is a national responsibility and a top priority. Therefore, we call upon the concerned authorities to complete the necessary investigations to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident and to take all measures and actions that will enhance traffic safety standards, in order to prevent the recurrence of such tragic accidents."
