China warned the European Union (EU) on Saturday against imposing further trade restrictions.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed in a statement, which was reviewed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "Beijing will deal firmly with any new measures it considers discriminatory against Chinese companies or products."

"The need for the European Union to adhere to the principles of free trade and fair competition and to refrain from protectionist policies and unilateral measures," he stressed.

"China will respond strongly and take effective measures to protect its legitimate interests if Brussels imposes unilateral trade instruments or introduces discriminatory restrictions targeting the Chinese economy," the ministry added.

The Chinese warning came after internal talks held by the European Commission on Friday to discuss the EU's trade policy towards China amid growing economic disputes between the two sides.
