A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.

The earthquake occurred in the Atacama Desert, approximately 31 kilometers from the town of Calama, at a depth of about 100 kilometers, according to the USGS.

Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) announced that there is no tsunami threat, noting that no injuries or significant infrastructure damage have been reported.

Local media stated that the tremors were felt across the regions of Arica, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama.

The South American nation is considered one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
