U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would not oppose Iran suspending its nuclear programme for 20 years, stressing that such a move must constitute a genuine commitment.
Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping had confirmed his opposition to Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.
He added that he did not ask the Chinese president for anything related to Iran, nor did he ask him to pressure Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said that 80% of Iran’s missile capabilities had been destroyed, adding that he is considering lifting sanctions on Chinese oil companies purchasing Iranian oil and would make a decision on the matter in the coming days.
He reiterated that Iran would not obtain a nuclear weapon under any circumstances.
