The Head of the Executive Body of the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), Baligh Abu Galal, affirmed today, Thursday, Iraq's commitment to building a modern digital system and activating 5G networks.
During his speech at the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR26) held in the Turkish capital, Ankara, Abu Galal said in a statement by the CMC received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Iraq is committed to building a modern digital system that enhances innovation, protects the user, and attracts investment, in line with the rapid transformations in the telecommunications and digital services sector."
He pointed out that "Iraq views the theme of the symposium, 'Navigating Digital Frontiers,' as a practical title for a new phase of digital regulation that requires flexible, outcome-based regulatory frameworks that encourage investment and innovation, while ensuring digital inclusion and protecting users."
He explained that "Iraq is witnessing a pivotal stage in digital transformation with the expanding use of the internet and mobile phones, and the high demand for digital services," stressing the continuous efforts of the Communications and Media Commission in regulating the telecommunications, broadcasting, and digital services sectors in accordance with the principles of transparency, objectivity, and non-discrimination.
He noted that "the Commission issued during February 2025 the regulatory framework for digital platforms and services, considering it an essential step toward modern regulation that includes local and international service providers, and balances user protection with encouraging the digital economy and opening the way for innovation."
The Head of the Executive Body emphasized "Iraq's support for the GSR26 guiding principles for best practices, particularly regarding outcome-based governance, encouraging investment, and reducing market entry barriers, as well as adaptive regulation, enhancing international cooperation, exchanging expertise, and building capacities."
He stressed "Iraq's commitment to activating fifth-generation (5G) networks with the highest levels of effort and speed, as an essential pillar for developing the digital infrastructure, improving connection quality, and enabling innovative services, while working to prepare the necessary regulatory, technical, and investment requirements for its efficient launch."
The Global Symposium GSR26 is witnessing wide participation from telecommunications experts and representatives of regulatory bodies from various countries around the world, focusing on regulatory governance, digital market regulation, cybersecurity, consumer protection, and enhancing competition among service providers.
