The Alarm Phone platform, which specializes in reporting migrants stranded at sea, announced that 38 migrants were rescued south of Gavdos Island, south of Crete.

The migrants issued distress calls after water leaked into the boat carrying them while they were heading toward the Greek coast.

The platform said the Greek coast guard intervened today to rescue the migrants and transfer them to Crete Island, but it was unable to contact them again afterward.

Meanwhile, on the central Mediterranean route, around 75 migrants stranded since Monday in Malta’s search and rescue zone are still awaiting intervention.

The platform stated that authorities obstructed a commercial vessel when it attempted to assist the migrants.

In a post on the platform “X,” the platform said: “We spoke with the captain of the commercial vessel ‘Kilburn,’ who confirmed to us that he is returning to the boat and will monitor the situation throughout the night.”

The NGO Sea-Watch stated that Libyan militias fired shots toward its rescue vessel “Sea-Watch 5,” while its aircraft “Seabird” monitored the situation from the air.

The organization added: “People are in a state of panic. The commercial vessel ‘Kilburn’ remains at the site despite Malta’s orders for it to move away, and rescue obligations remain in effect.”
